GET TO KNOW THE DESIGNER BEHIND THE WORK
ABOUT ME
"An architect's most useful tools are an eraser at the drafting board and a wrecking bar at the site."
- Frank Lloyd Wright
Hi, I’m Derek, a visual designer based in the DMV who eats, sleeps, and breathes design. When I’m not at my day job, you’ll likely find me working on a creative project, whether it’s for a client, or just for fun.
A Blend of Creativity and Strategy
I specialize in graphic and web design, with over a decade of experience working across industries. My clients have included federal agencies, colleges and universities, nonprofits, political campaigns, real estate firms, restaurants, churches, retail businesses, startups, and small businesses. If there’s a message to be communicated visually, I’ve probably helped someone bring it to life.
What sets me apart is my background—not only in graphic design but also in political science. I earned two B.A. degrees from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. My design training sharpens my eye for layout, branding, and storytelling, while my political science background enhances my research, writing, and strategic thinking. This combination has been especially valuable in a city like D.C., where both design and data-driven messaging matter.
Professional Experience
Digital Information Specialist (Nov. 2022 - Jun. 2025)
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
At NIA, I led in-house design projects from concept to completion, either independently or with contracting teams. I collaborated with scientists and subject matter experts to develop and refresh web content for desktop and mobile, always keeping accessibility and federal best practices in mind. I created animated videos that made complex health topics easier to understand and oversaw the institute’s web analytics, turning data into actionable insights.
Design Patent Examiner (Aug. 2022 - Nov 2022)
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
As a Design Patent Examiner, I reviewed patent applications—mainly in the bedding industry (pillows and mattresses)—to determine novelty and patentability. I conducted prior art research, wrote legal justifications, and became well-versed in the details of design law and documentation.
Visual Design Contractor (Aug. 2018 - Aug. 2022)
B&A, Contract with the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts
In this role, I developed websites, marketing materials, training videos, social media content, and more. I also provided analytics tracking, usability testing, HTML/CSS support, and design consultation across multiple platforms.
